Glavine to Rejoin Mets for 1 More Year

ESPN news is reporting that Tom Glavine and the New York Mets have agreed on a 1-year deal, worth 10.5 million dollars. He was also given an option for 2008, if he pitches 160 innings he will get $6 million, and it goes up $1 million for every 10 ininngs up to $10 million dollars. From what I can gather the Braves never even offered Glavine a contract to play for them next year.

This is a solid deal, $10.5 Million is a solid price for a guy who's only going to be on the team for 1 more year. In this market, $10.5 Million for a guy who won 15 games and had an incredible post season is another great deal by Omar. Granted, he probably wanted to go back to Atlanta, but didn't have the option, though, he will have the best chance at winning his 300th game, getting another ring, and being on a winning team.

This means that the Mets can finally move on and focus on either signing Barry Zito or trading for another big starting pitcher to strengthen what was the weakest part of the 2006 Mets. This makes Minaya's job a little bit easier, because he isn't so strapped to get an ace, because he has Glavine in the hole.

Mets Make Moves

Over the past couple of days the Mets have been pretty busy. They signed Moises Alou to a one-year deal worth 7.5 million dollars with a 2008 team option worth $7.5 million with a $1 million buyout. They also traded Henry Owens and Matt Lindstrom for Jason Vargas and Adam Bostick from the Marlins, Vargas and Bostick are both 23 year old left handed starting pitchers. They also declined Tom Glavine's 2007 option, they paid him a $3 million buyout.

First, the Alou signing. This is a great signing in my eyes. I believe that Alou will be a great stop gap for one year, he is a very solid right handed bat who crushes left handed pitching, the guy can just rake, which is exactly what the Mets needed. He also will provide some protection for David Wright in the lineup, and will be given many opportunities for RBI. If he can get 400 ABs he could have a great year. As long as he stays healthy I see him having a very solid year, but as we found out with the 2006 Mets, that is an enormous IF.

The trade with the Marlins was a little surprising, but finding young starting lefties is hard to do, so it works out. There is really no room for Owens and Lindstrom in the bullpen, who are both getting into their upper 20's in the minors. We really won't know how this deal worked out for a few years, but I think a guy like Vargas can become a solid National League pitcher.

Everyone knew that they would decline Glavine's option. It seems as though they have a deal on the table that Glavine has agreed to, but is waiting to hear from the Braves. It seems as though proximity to his family might be the only reason he goes back to Atlanta, if he wants a chance at another ring, his best bet is to stay in Queens, which I think he will eventually do.

Milledge On The Way Out?

According to Ken Davidoff of Newsday the Mets are interested in shipping out Milledge for either a big bat or a big time pitcher. His named has been linked to deal around Manny Ramirez (will this one ever end), Vernon Wells, Jake Peavy, Dontrelle Willis, and many others, including some White Sox starters.

This is the same thing we've been hearing for the last 18 months, but with a new name inserted every few months. Like I've said all along, if you can find the right deal, there is no reason to keep Milledge. Lately, with his refusal to play winter ball, the Mets have been annoyed with him. It may be time to send him packing, especially if you can get a big time player in return. His stock may also have dropped a little with the Mets as Carlos Gomez and Fernando Martinez continue to turn into top OF prospects. Again, only time will tell, but ever since Minaya has come aboard, the offseasons have been just as eventful as the regular season.

Mets Acquire Ben Johnson and Jon Adkins from Padres

According to Ken Rosenthal the Mets have traded Royce Ring and Heath Bell to the Padres for RHP Jon Adkins and OF Ben Johnson.

This is a decent trade I guess, spare parts for spare parts, but you have to like Minaya in a deal like this, he always seems to get the guy he feels will excel in a deal like this. Sanchez and Mota last year are definitely guys who come to mind. We'll see how this trade works out next year, but these two guys were considered decent prospects and could be worth it, only time will tell though, like most prospects.

Mets Close to Resigning El Duque; Interested in Zito

According the Mark Hale's article in the New York Post the Mets are close to resigning Orlando Hernandez to a 2-year, $6 Million contract. Also, he notes that the Mets have interest in signing Barry Zito, although he's not sure if they want to sign him at 5-years, $73 million, which it looks like will be lowest amount he'd sign for. Hale also notes the Mets have interest in Vicente Padilla.

I like the El Duque contract, he loves to pitch, loves to win and is a great clubhouse guy, no reason not to bring him back. Although they will have to overpay, i feel like bringing Zito in would be a great signing. He has the stuff to truly dominate in the National League. Padilla is an interesting pitcher, i feel like he'd be nothing better than a number 3 starter, so he shouldn't be signed at anything more than type of money.

Mets Break Ground on CitiField

The Mets have just broken ground on the new stadium, which is sponsored by Citigroup. It is being named CitiField.

It could be worse than being sponsored by Citi. It's got a New York ring to it. It looks like the new park is going to be amazing and really makes me look forward to 2009.

Reports: Valentin and Mets Agree on 1-Year Deal

According to ESPN.com the Mets and Jose Valentin have agreed on a 1 year deal worth atleast $3 million.

This is surprising how fast they resigned him, especially since he said he doesn't want to be a role player, but a starter. I'm not sure that he can be guaranteed a starting position this early in the off season. Very interesting to resign this early.

Reyes and Beltran win Silver Slugger Award

Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes each won the Silver Slugger award today, presented by Louisville Slugger. This was the first time either won the Award. ESPN.com has an entire list of everyone else who was given the award.

This goes to show that people obviously know that Beltran is a great hitter, but more importantly, they are recognizing Reyes as a great hitter. Congratulations to both Beltran and Reyes.

Notes

Well, back after a little Hiatus, haven't been able to post the last few days.

A few things that happened since i posted last time.

According the AP, Tom Glavine has officially filed for Free Agency

This is not a surprise, he wanted to explore his options either way, so the chances he resigns with the Mets are the same they have always been.

The Seibu Lions have recieved the highest bid for Daisuke Matsuzaka, but the public won't know who put in the highest bid until the Lions formally accept.

Buzz from around the league is that the Lions will accept before the end of the day. So hopefully we will know one way or another by tonight. This should give us a better idea of which direction the Mets will go for starting pitching.

Reyes and Wright had a solid week in Japan, Reyes hit a walk off home run in the last game of the series, which was followed by the entire starting starting the "Jose, Jose" chant.

Pretty Crazy, sounds like this kid is becoming an international star.

Delgado Staying in Shea

According to Mets.com Carlos Delgado will not be exercising his right to demand a trade this offseason. Delgado batted .265 with 38 home runs and 114 RBIs in 144 games for the Mets last season. He also won the Roberto Clemente Award this year for outstanding community service

"[Delgado] wants to be a Met for the rest of his career," Minaya said.

"I've enjoyed myself here," Delgado said last month. "I can't wait until next season because I want to make it to the playoffs again. We came up a little short, but it gives you something to look forward to for next year."

This is great news for the Mets, knowing that they have their rock at first base for atleast two more seasons is very comforting news for Met fan. He is a huge force on the field, but just as importantly in the clubhouse. He is truly an all around player.

Mets fans now have a reason to dance because Delgado is coming back:

Mets Interested in Loretta

According to the New York Post the Mets and Mark Loretta have a mutual interest.

"Playing for a contender is Loretta's top priority. The 35-year-old Loretta hit .285 with five homers, 59 RBIs and a .345 on-base percentage this past season with the Red Sox. He is a career .299 hitter, with his best year coming in 2004 with the Padres when he hit .335 with 16 homers. Defensively, Loretta only committed four errors this past year, tying for second-best among AL second basemen."

This would be a decent move by the Mets, although i see Loretta as a 2 hitter, which is where LoDuca hits. He would be a solid 8 hitter as well, but his numbers may drop a little bit because of the lack of pitches he'd see compared to the 2 hole, where last year he hit in front of David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez. Loretta's defense is incredible and would be a huge lift, although Valentin was very solid. Loretta would be a good fit for the Mets, but I don't expect his numbers to be equal to what he hit last year.

Here's Loretta with a Walkoff Hit against the Indians last year:

Trade Rumors

Joel Sherman's article in the New York Post talks of potential trades that he thinks teams should make. He proposes the idea of Lastings Milledge, Aaron Heilman and Henry Owens (74 Ks in 40 IP, .137 BAA in AA last year), for the Padres Jake Peavy.

If this deal were ever on the table i don't see why Minaya would not take it. He feels Heilman is a reliever, Owens is 28 and he has always said that he'd be willing to deal Milledge for an ace. Peavy is a power pitcher who has only trailed Johan Santana in strikeouts the past 2 seasons. This would be a good deal for both teams, but I imagine it is far from happening.

Here is Peavy striking out 13 Brewers last year.

Beltran Wins Gold Glove

Carlos Beltran has won his first career Rawlings Gold Glove award today for his position in the outfield. Beltran made countless great defensive plays throughout the season. Beltran started 136 games in center field for New York in 2006, notching a career-best .995 fielding percentage over 1,184 innings. Beltran made just two errors in 372 total chances, recording 357 putouts while contributing 13 outfield assists and six double plays. He was the only Met to win the award this year. Others who won the award were Andruw Jones (9th), Greg Maddux (16th), Ex-Met Mike Cameron (3rd), Albert Pujols (1st), Orlando Hudson (2nd), Scott Rolen (7th), Brad Ausmus (3rd), and Omar Vizquel (11th).

Congratulations to Carlos on this great award. It makes you remember all the great plays he made this year, robbing multiple home runs, saving the game with the incredible catch against Houston, and many more. This is the first of many Gold Gloves for Carlos Beltran if he keeps playing like this.

Moose the Met?

Apparently Mike Mussina would be interested in joining the Mets if he does not return to the Yankees. He has a $17 Million option that the Yankees will likely not pick up, though he may resign with the Yankees anyway. "Pitching for the Mets would offer Mussina a chance to stay in his Westchester home during the season and Mussina, a creature of habit, isn't wild about radical changes in his life. As for what the Mets would be willing to pay Mussina, they figure to be in the $10 million to $12 million range per year with Tom Glavine, and Mussina is two years younger." Says Mark Hale of the New York Post.

This would be a great signing for the Mets. Mussina is a very strong pitcher who can eat up innings and doesn't take attitude from anyone. He has no problem pitching inside and would be a huge help to the Mets if he were signed.

Let The Bidding War Begin

MLB.com is reporting that the bidding has begun today at 5:00 pm. All bids are due by Wednesday November 8th at 5pm. Matsuzaka's team, the Seibu Lions, will then learn the amount of the bid, but not the team who submitted it. They will then have until November 14th to accept it. If Seibu accepts, the team with the highest bid will be able to negotiate with Matsuzaka and his agent, Scott Boras. MLB says, "Even before the official posting, the Mariners, Angels, Orioles and Giants have reportedly removed themselves from the picture, according to various published reports."

This could get extremely interesting. Reports are saying that the Mets, Yankees and Red Sox are all interested and the bid could get upwards of $30 Million. For a better look at the guy take a look at Matsuzaka Watch and Jeff Sackmann's Article at the Hardball Times, both should give you a better idea of the pitcher before jumping to conclusions and terrible thoughts of Kaz Matsui run through your head.

Wright Blasts off in Japan

According to Adam Rubin, who's following the USA team in Japan, David Wright hit a 2 run home run with 2 outs in the ninth inning this morning to tie the game at 7 against the Yomiuri Giants in the Tokyo Dome. And in the true all-star game fashion, the game ended in a 7-7 tie. Wright said following the game:

"We take pride in representing Major League Baseball. We take pride in representing our individual teams," "We’re going to come over here and try to win. There’s no doubt about that. It’s competitive. You get in these international competitions, you’re representing not only yourself. You’re representing a lot of different teams and countries and Major League Baseball. It was very exciting. I watched the replay and saw the reaction of the bench and how excited the bench got. That makes it a lot of fun."

Wright really loves making a name for himself all over the globe. He really makes the most of the "All-Star" events, the home run derby, a homer in the All-star game, and now this...he really knows how to make the most of a situation.

Milledge Helps Old High School Club

Lastings Milledge is donating $5000 to the Bradenton Mustangs High School Baseball Team says the Bradenton Herald. The team's uniforms dated back to the beginning of the program.

Hopefully this will start to show people that Lastings in more than just a bad club house guy. Also, hopefully this shows that Milledge is maturing a little bit and that he can prove to his team that he isn't a bad guy. I feel like he was more of oblivious rookie this season, as opposed to a bad guy, I guess that we will see how this helps Minaya decide whether or not he wants to trade him.

Mota Suspended 50 games for Steroids

According to ESPN Guillermo Mota has been suspended for 50 for violating the leagues substance abuse policy. Mota said he took "full responsibility" and also said:

"I used extremely poor judgment and deserve to be held accountable,"

"To my teammates and the entire Mets organization, I am sorry. I truly regret what I did and hope that you can forgive me."

"To baseball fans everywhere, I understand that you are disappointed in me, and I don't blame you," he added. "I feel terrible and I promise this is the first and last time that this will happen."

This could change a lot of things for the Mets in the offseason, knowing if they re-sign Mota he won't be able to pitch until June the Mets may have to go in another direction. They might have to keep Aaron Heilman and not let him start. Or they could sign a free agent 7th inning setup man to hand the ball off to Sanchez in the 8th. This may handcuff Minaya a little bit when figuring out whether he wants to deal Heilman or put him in the rotation or whether he wants to re-sign Mota and wait it out for him. I guess only time will tell where this takes us this offseason.

Cubs Like Heilman

According to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune the cubs are interested in acquiring Aaron Heilman in a deal with the Mets this winter. No names have been discussed in who would be returned in any deals.

This would be an interesting deal, because i really have no idea who the Mets would want in return. Would it be an infielder like Cesar Izturis or a prospect. MLBTradeRumors.com suggests that maybe the Mets would like Eric Patterson, the prospect 2nd baseman who was drafted in the 8th round of the 2004 draft, he hit .358 in a short stint at double A last year, he was also an all star at the single A level.

Big News On Glavine

The New York Daily News is reporting that the Mets and Tom Glavine and close to coming to terms on a Two Year, $25 Million contract. Glavine is 48-48 with a 3.85 ERA in four seasons with the team. He was 15-7 with a 3.82 ERA in 198 innings in 2006 and threw 13 scoreless innings over his first two postseason starts. Glavine also has 290 Wins, just 10 short of 300, this deal would all but guarantee Glavine would get number 300 with the Mets.

This is a pretty surprising story. I didn't expect Glavine to pitch past 2007, but i'm not surprised. He throws so easy that he is not really wearing himself out. This will also help with all the young pitchers on the Mets that are coming up, to have such an accomplished veteran pitcher as a mentor. I would not mind at all if Glavine were to come back for 2 more years. He is a great guy to have around the clubhouse and he showed how well he can pitch in October.

Mets News from Today

According to El Duque's agent, in Mark Hale's Column, he wants to come back to the Mets, but the Mets might not be willing to give him a multiyear deal he is looking for.

Who can blame the Mets though, nobody in America knows how old this guy is, probably not even El Duque, he had to have lost track once he went over the hill.

In the same article it says relievers Guillermo Mota, Chad Bradford and Roberto Hernandez all filed for free agency.

I believe the Mets will pursue Mota and Bradford extremely hard this winter and Hernandez could be back if one of the previous two don't re-sign. I hope that Mota and especially Bradford are back, these two were incredibly productive and it's almost impossible for rightys to hit off Bradford.

Apparently Heilman has told management he wants to be a starting pitcher again.

This could lead to a few things. Either a trade to another team or depending on Sanchez's return, Heilman returning to the rotation. For some reason Mets brass don't like Heilman in the rotation, where he excelled at times in the past.

7 Mets File for Free Agency

According to Mets.com 7 Mets have officially filed for free agency so far this offseason. Jose Valentin, Michael Tucker, Cliff Floyd, Orlando Hernandez, Steve Trachsel, Chris Woodward and Ricky Ledee.

Out of these players, i can see Valentin, Floyd, and Woodward possibly coming back, but probably in lesser roles than they have had in the past, Valentin would possibly be a bench player, but if you remember from last year, he had a tough time with that in the beginning of the season. El Duque may come back, but the only way i see him coming back is if Glavine returns to Atlanta. I don't think the Mets want two older starters in their rotation with all the cheap, young talent. Ledee and Trachsel are absolutely gone and Tucker will most likely sign elsewhere as a bench player. If Valentin doesn't return the Mets will look elsewhere for a starting 2nd baseman, Julio Lugo may be an option through free agency.

Here We Go Again

Another Winter, Another Manny Rumor....Just like last winter, and the july deadline before that the Manny Ramirez rumors are back, Mark Healy of Gotham Baseball that a source in Boston says that the Sox are interested in Aaron Heilman as a possible closer for next season and are still very high on Lastings Milledge. They also say that the Mets would have to pickup a large portion of Manny's remaining $39 million over the next 2 seasons.

I truly don't see this being in the Mets best interest for the future. Not only would they be trading for a guy who is getting older, but who's production has gone down a little recently and can be prone to the injury. Also, he's been considered very lazy and lives in his own little world...Do we really want Manny being Manny at Shea next year? You can't argue with the numbers, but whereever Manny goes, a headache is sure to follow.

Position by Position Analysis:

Starting Pitching: Last year 13 different players started games for the Mets at different points of the season, Pedro Martinez, Tom Glavine, Orlando Hernandez, Steve Trachsel, John Maine, Jose Lima, Jeremi Gonzalez, Alay Soler, Mike Pelfrey, Victor Zambrano, Oliver Perez, Dave Williams, and Brian Bannister. With the way John Maine, who is rumored to be working on a splitter with Rick Peterson in the offseason, and Oliver Perez pitched in the most important games of the season in front of a packed house at Shea Stadium most Mets fans feel they have what it takes to be a big part of the future rotation of the Mets. Pedro Martinez should be nice acquisition around the Trade Deadline after rehabbing from shoulder surgery. Tom Glavine is deciding between the Mets and Braves as the spot he wants to celebrate his historic 300th victory next season pending a disaster, though I’m sure the Mets brass would love to have him back. The next time Steve Trachsel pitches in Shea Stadium he’ll be taking his time in a visitor’s uniform. The rumors floating around El Duque is that he wants to test the free agent waters, but I feel if Minaya offers him a one year deal for a few million dollars ($2-4 Million) he’ll be back at Shea after the way his season ended so disappointingly in ’06 with a freak calf injury before Game 1 of the playoffs. The Mets definitely need a veteran pitcher, especially if Glavine or El Duque aren’t back. Look for Minaya to get one of the big names free agents out there, whether it’s Zito, Schimdt or Matzusaka, but after the way Jeff Suppan carved apart the Mets in the NLCS I wouldn’t be surprised if he were the 3rd or 4th starter in Flushing next season. Chances are one of the big three listed above with be pitching on the mound at Shea next year. I imagine Zito has the best chance of getting signed, he comes from the American League and is a proven successful pitcher. Schmidt can be fragile and after the Kaz Matsui disaster the Wilpon’s are scared to invest in Japanese players, especially when it costs atleast 30 million just to start negotiating a contract with him. Another interesting pick to fill out the rotation would be Aaron Heilman, but I feel he will be traded by the organization before he is taken out of the bullpen. His one bad pitch he made in the playoffs will never be forgotten by Mets fans, which is a shame because of the way he picked up the slack after Sanchez went down in July. I just don’t see Heilman ever starting again with the Mets. With any luck Lima Time will never happen at Shea again, talk about disgracing the number 17. Mike Pelfrey and Phil Humber may still be a year from being ready to go out every fifth day in the bigs, but they show signs that it will be well worth the wait for Met fans. Bannister and Soler will almost definitely start the season in New Orleans with the new AAA squad and Dave Williams could settle nicely into the role that Darren Oliver could leave open if he isn’t resigned. And last but not least, which is debatable, most Mets fans will never want to see the NY on Victor Zambrano’s hat again, unless it’s a white NY with a navy background. I’d imagine the Rotation to start the season next year will look a little something like this:

1) Barry Zito

2) El Duque

3) John Maine

4) Oliver Perez

5) Jeff Suppan/Mike Pelfrey

But remember, Pedro Martinez will be back in late July and judging by the way the rotation went this year, there is no way that those are the only pitchers that start for the Mets next season.

Catcher: Paul LoDuca will remain the backstop for the Mets next season. The way he handled the pitching staff and continually hit for a high average has Mets fan really loving this guy. Ramon Castro is a very serviceable big league back up and the off season will allow him to rest his injury. Mike DeFelice will remain in the minors working with Pelfrey, Humber and the rest of the pitching prospects.

First Base: Although Carlos Delgado has the right to demand a trade because he was traded after the first year of a multiyear contract I say that chances are he’ll remain with the club. Though, he might use this to renegotiate an extension with Minaya to make sure he plays with the Mets longer and guarantee his financial security through retirement. Only if the Ageless Wonder, Julio Franco, retires he won’t be a part of the Mets next season. This should provide not only a decent bat off the bench and a late inning spell for Delgado in the field, but more importantly the invaluable wisdom and experiences he provides for younger players in the clubhouse. An interesting note, will Mets’ Prospect of the Year, Mike Carp get any time with the club in 2007 before September?

Second Base: This Position is a huge wild card for the team. Jose Valentin played a great 2nd base throughout the season, went 63 games without an error and played incredibly throughout the playoffs on the defensive side, but his offense really struggled through the end of the season and into the playoffs, will Minaya keep ridin’ this horse or will he realize that he might have used all of what Valentin had left. He’s a great clubhouse guy and the team liked him, but is it worth keeping him around as a starter? He played well enough where he can go to a smaller market and start, but will he want to stay as a bench player, something he really struggled with? I doubt it. The in-organization options are players like Anderson Hernandez and Ruben Gotay, which the team doesn’t seem to incredibly high, though they love Hernandez glove, they have to think it’s a concern he simply can’t hit. You would have to think they will go to the Free Agent Market for this position. Alfonso Soriano is a “sexy” player to put here, but his defense is not even average and he is too much of a free swinger and can often be a lazy player. The talent is there, no doubt, but is it worth it for the Mets to give him a bad contract that they will probably regret in 3 years? Probably Not, but I wouldn’t put anything that would really help the teams offense, which really struggled in October, past Minaya. I think Julio Lugo, who wouldn't mind playing for the Mets, has a good shot of getting picked up or maybe someone with lower production, but who can excel on defense, like a Loretta or a Grudzielanek. I think it’s either going to Lugo or Valentin going out to second base next year. I don’t see the Mets having Soriano at second, even if they do sign him, he’d probably play the outfield because of his bad infield defense.

Shortstop: Jose Reyes is locked up for the next four years at 6 million a year, a real steal for the Mets, which is ironic, because Reyes is the one who is so good at stealing. Reyes really matured this year at the plate doubling his walk today from the season before and is only 23. Just think how he could turn out to be in a few more years. The sky is the limit with this kid. Anderson Hernandez or a Chris Woodward type player will be able to back him up on the occasional off day that Willie will give.

Third Base: With all the troubles the franchise has had at third base throughout the years it seems they made a smart call locking up David Wright for 6 years at about 10 million a year. Although he struggled in the second half of the season and in the NLCS Mets fans have complete confidence that he will be fine next season and carry this franchise into the future and beyond. Wright gets only a handful of days off a year, and whoever the Mets carry as their utility infielder will spell him on those days. Wright and Reyes provide the front office with a couple of very young, home grown players who are locked up through at least the opening of the new stadium in 2009. This is not only great for the Mets management, but also for fans who especially in New York love seeing homegrown kids become stars in the big city (Darryl Strawberry, Doc Gooden, Derek Jeter, Etc.), hopefully Reyes and Wright will be added to this list within the next couple seasons, if they aren’t on it already.

Left Field: There are a few places the Mets could go for this corner outfield spot. One could be Endy Chavez, who maybe made the best catch in playoff history in game 7 of the NLCS but struggled a little bit as an everyday player, he played much better when he wasn’t expected to produce everyday as a starter. Mets fans have grown to love Endy for his gold glove caliber play and constant hustle, but he may not be the best solution for the outfield, he still sometimes swings for the fences a little too much for a speed guy. Cliff Floyd probably won’t be resigned, even though he is a fan favorite he is clearly a little past his prime as is very fragile. It is time for the Mets to part ways his Floyd, respectfully. Lastings Milledge is another option for this position. The highly touted prospect struggled last year defensively at times and has yet to get a major league bat in the small sample we saw him, although there were flashes of brilliance. The biggest knock on this guy is that some people seem think he could become a clubhouse cancer people, if he isn't already. The infamous “know your place rook” incident really hurt this guy and may eventually lead to him being traded for some pitching this winter. The free agent options are Carlos Lee and Alfonso Soriano, those guys like Moises Alou and David Delluci are much more realistic fits in my opinion. If Milledge gets traded this winter expect Minaya to sign one of those two, if not I’d imagine that Chavez and Milledge would both see time in left next season if not. And there are always the Manny rumors, but I don’t think Minaya likes the idea of Manny coming to the Mets anymore, he’s not what they need at this point, in 2005 at the deadline it would have been nice, but the offense can be worked out in other spots for much less (money and prospects).

Center Field: Although some Mets fans are down on Carlos Beltran after going down looking to end the season with the bases loaded in Game 7 it is impossible to argue that he didn’t have a great year and helped the Mets tremendously throughout the entire season. I expect the same next season. Beltran really fell into a nice groove in New York in his sophomore season and should play well again next year. He also has gold glove qualities in the field and truly displayed all five tools in 2006. The Mets will be fine in center field for the next few years.

Right Field: This position is a real toss up for the team as well. It looks like it probably will be Shawn Green, but there is a chance Minaya tries to dump his salary and look elsewhere to fill the position. It could be filled in a trade. Rumors circiling around the league are for a smaller trade or free agent signing if Green is no longer with the team. Again, it could be Alou or Delluci, or a trade for a player like Eric Byrnes or possibly, but very far from likely, Carl Crawford. Acquiring Crawford would probably cost too much in prospects and somehow the Devils Rays always end up ripping people off, especially the Mets (Cough, Cough…Kazmir). I imagine that Shawn Green will end up staying in right field and be spelled by Milledge or Chavez if the Mets acquire a big name player for left field through free agency or trade.

Bullpen: The Mets will most likely carry 7 guys in the bullpen (12 all together with 5 starters). Wagner is definitely coming back, although like every other closer in Mets history, fans sometimes still hold their breath until the last out. Sanchez should be back and healthy after the devastating blow he took in a taxi accident in Miami. Minaya hopes to resign Guillermo Mota and Chad Bradford. Aaron Heilman will most likely be back as a right handed setup man. If Darren Oliver is not signed, Dave Williams could fit into the long relief role quite nicely. The forgotten man in the ‘pen, Pedro Feliciano, had a great year posting an ERA slightly above 2. Juan Padilla could be a nice addition if comes back healthy from the surgery he needed in the middle of the 2006 season. The Mets bullpen was the best in the NL most of the season and I don’t see much reason that it won’t be again next season. If Heilman were to be traded or Mota or Bradford aren’t back look for Henry Owens, Royce Ring, or Heath Bell to fill in these spots, while spending time in New Orleans also. Also, look out for the Futures Game closer in 2006 Matt Lindstrom to maybe get a shot in the ‘pen at some point during the season. Lindstrom has a fastball that reaches the low 100s.

Bench: The Mets had a great bench in the 2006 season and helped them win their first division in 18 years. Endy Chavez and Jose Valentin started the year on the bench, but their play earned them spots in the starting lineup for most of the second half. Julio Franco still amazes everyone by playing at age 48 and constantly slapping hits the opposite way. Chris Woodward may or may not be back, but if he isn’t Omar Minaya will find another great bench player in the rough like he did so well the past two years. Look for Anderson Hernandez to work on his swing this winter and probably secure a spot on the 25 man roster come April his glove and speed are already top of the line, but he is a very below average hitter, though he showed some promise in September. Ramon Castro will serve as backup catcher and clubhouse comedian again next year. There is a chance that Lastings Milledge finds a spot on the bench, although if he’s not playing everyday he’d be better off in the New Orleans getting at bats and live action.

Welcome

For the past couple of weeks I've been trying to figure out a title for my new blog. I have gone from clever Mets phrases that are already being used, to some of the dumbest thing I've ever thought of, but in the wake of yesterday's 20th anniversary of the Buckner play and the victory of Game 6 of the World Series, who said it better than Vin Scully and instead of making up a Mets catchphrase for the name, I figured why not use something that has since ever been remembered by Met fans. "A little roller up along first....Behind the Bag...It gets through Buckner, here comes Knight and the Mets win it." Now a little about my history, I've been a die-hard Mets fan for about 10 years, since I was about 12 years old and went to my first Met game with my family. I've just graduated from Syracuse university and wanted to share my fanaticism with other Met fans all over the world. After reading many other New York Mets and baseball blogs I decided I wanted to start my own. I appreciate you taking the time to come and look around if you like what you see, drop me a line or tell other baseball fans to swing by. Thanks, Adam.
